The report highlights:
- A curriculum that deepens pupils’ understanding of their heritage and encourages them to look to the future with confidence.
- Strong progress in literacy, numeracy and digital skills, with pupils leaving school as confident communicators in Welsh and English.
- Entrepreneurship projects that develop financial literacy, teamwork and creativity, giving pupils real-life experiences with local businesses.
- An exceptionally caring ethos, with staff forging positive relationships that support pupils’ well-being, behaviour and attitudes to learning.
- Strong collaboration across the federation, ensuring pupils benefit from high-quality teaching and learning opportunities.
Inspectors praised the passion of staff, who share the headteacher’s vision to foster principled, enterprising citizens who are proud of their community and their language. They also noted that pupils show excellent behaviour, positive attitudes to learning, and take on leadership roles through pupil voice groups.
Headteacher, Mr Gethin Elis Thomas, said, “We are delighted that Estyn has recognised the strengths of both schools. The success of Ysgol Penybryn and Ysgol Abercaseg is built on teamwork between staff, pupils, families and our community. Together, we are nurturing children who are proud of their identity and confident about their future.”
Chair of Governors, Mrs Robyn Meredydd, added, “This report is a fantastic reflection of the hard work and commitment across the federation. It shows that our pupils receive an education that is firmly rooted in their local community, while giving them the skills and confidence to thrive in the wider world.”
A Year 6 pupil commented, “We love the projects and the experiences outside the classroom we do because they help us learn new skills and get us ready for the future. We are proud of our schools and of speaking Welsh every day.”
The report concludes that Ysgol Penybryn and Ysgol Abercaseg are schools that are rooted in the community yet outward-looking, ensuring pupils are proud of their heritage and ready to face the future.
